Russian floating reactor operation
[2020-05-28]

The Russian academician Lomonosov floating reactor (FNPP) is officially operating in pervac city in the Far East of the Chu Kota region. The reactor is the first officially operated floating reactor in the world, approved by the Russian atomic energy company. The Russian atomic energy company is a subsidiary of the Russian Ross atomic energy company in charge of civil reactor operation.

Earlier, the regional supervisory authority of Russia's nuclear safety regulatory agency issued a compliance statement on academician Lomonosov, which verified that FNPP had been built according to all project documents requirements. On the basis of this statement, Russian atomic energy company approved the operation of academician Lomonosov. In addition, the project has been approved by the Russian environmental regulatory agency.

The Russian atomic energy company said recently that the approval documents showed that FNPP has fully complied with all the codes and regulations, including health, epidemiology, environment, fire safety, building requirements and federal standards. The official operation of the academician Lomonosov floating reactor marks the success of the floating reactor construction project, which is the main achievement of the company in 2020. It is the eleventh reactor in Russia and the northernmost reactor in the world.

FNPP, consisting of two 35MWe KLT-40C reactors, began supplying power to the grid in December 19, 2019. Since connected to the grid, 47.3GWh has been generated, and now it has already met the 20% demand for electricity in the Chu Kota area. After the Billy nuclear power plant is closed, FNPP will become the main source of electricity in the region.

The electric power of FNPP is 70MWe, the heat capacity is 50Gcal/h (210GJ/h), 140 meters long, 30 meters wide, and the drainage capacity is 21500 tons.
